A degree candidate wears the cap and gown that is appropriate for the degree they receive at convocation, regardless of any previous degrees received. Doctoral candidates are not hooded at the ceremony, but candidates who have received their hoods may wear them at the ceremony. Convocation is a formal and traditional ceremony, and we ask that any attire or adornment worn by candidates be appropriate for the occasion.
The University has introduced new, custom academic regalia to be worn at the June 9, 2018 ceremony. The slideshow on the right displays regalia photos for each degree, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral gowns.
Order your Academic Regalia
Academic attire, which includes a cap, gown, and tassel, is available for order at uchicago.shopoakhalli.com. Alternatively, attire may be purchased at the University Bookstore, located at 970 East 58th Street, April 2 through June 8, 2018. To ensure a proper fit and avoid long lines, please purchase your cap and gown early. You will be able to retain both as a keepsake.
Bachelor's and Master's Degrees
Academic attire, which includes a cap, gown, and tassel, will be available for purchase at the cost of $63 for Bachelor's candidates or $88 for Master's candidates. Attire is available for order online and may be picked up beginning the week of June 4, 2018. Attire will be available for purchase at the University Bookstore beginning April 1, 2018, and will be available through the week of convocation.
Doctoral and Law Degrees
Academic attire, which includes a tam, gown, and tassel, is available for rent at the cost of $80. Some candidates will be required to rent a hood for an additional $47.
The deadline to rent attire in-store or online is May 8, 2018. Rented academic attire will be available for pick-up at the University Bookstore beginning June 4, 2018. Rented attire must be returned to the University Bookstore following the ceremony, and no later than June 11, 2018.
If you prefer to purchase attire, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Purchased doctoral attire requires four to six weeks lead time, so orders must be placed by April 30, 2018, to guarantee delivery for the ceremony.
Bachelor's and master's gowns are made of 100 percent postconsumer recycled plastic bottles, using GreenWeaver technology, a process 100 percent achieved in the United States. If you would like to donate your gown after the ceremony, please coordinate directly with your Dean of Students Office. Thank you for doing your part to help promote a sustainable campus.
