Academic Regalia

Academic Regalia

All degree candidates must wear the proper academic regalia that is appropriate for the degree they receive at Convocation, regardless of any previous degrees received. Convocation is a formal and traditional ceremony, and we ask that any attire or adornment worn by candidates be appropriate for the occasion. All regalia is available to order through the University Bookstore, located on campus at 970 East 58th Street, or at Oak Hall.

Bachelor's and Master's Degrees

Bachelor’s degree candidates are to purchase a cap, gown, and tassel at the cost of $63. Master’s degree candidates are to purchase a tam, gown, and tassel, available for $88. Some divisions and schools require candidates to wear a hood, which can be purchased for an additional $38. It is encouraged that students contact their area dean of students office for regalia requirements and costs, as they differ by unit.

Attire ordered before March 15, 2019, can be picked up at Countdown to Convocation on April 17 and April 18, 2019, at Ida Noyes Hall, where professional photos can be taken of candidates in their full academic regalia. Unsatisfied regalia needs after March 15 can be facilitated by visiting the University Bookstore or by visiting Oak Hall.

Doctoral and Law Degrees

Doctoral and Law degree candidates are to wear a tam, gown, and tassel, available for rent at the cost of $80. Some candidates will be required to rent a hood for an additional $47. Rented M.D. regalia orders must be placed by April 19, 2019, to ensure delivery before Convocation. Rented Doctoral and Law regalia must be ordered by May 10, 2019. You may also order your attire at Countdown to Convocation or by visiting Oak Hall. Rented attire must be returned to the University Bookstore following the ceremony and no later than June 17, 2019.

If you prefer to purchase attire, please email bksuchicago@bncollege.com. Purchased academic attire requires six weeks of lead time to guarantee delivery for your unit's ceremony.

Sustainability

Bachelor's and master's gowns are made of 100 percent postconsumer recycled plastic bottles, using GreenWeaver technology, a process 100 percent achieved in the United States. If you would like to donate your gown after the ceremony, please coordinate directly with your Dean of Students Office. Thank you for doing your part to help promote a sustainable campus.
