University of Chicago’s Convocation Weekend 2018: Friday, June 8 through Saturday, June 9

As we prepare to welcome an increased number of guests to campus, we are providing our neighborhood community with advance details about the festivities. We hope that by offering this information in advance that there are no disruptions to your routine over the course of the weekend.

Friday, June 8, 2018

All operations and parking structures throughout campus and the medical center will remain as is. For a detailed view of street closures and parking restrictions throughout Hyde Park, please refer to the map below. Affected areas include:

  • Ellis Avenue
  • University Avenue
  • East 55th Street
  • East 56th Street
  • East 57th Street
  • East 59th Street
  • Midway Plaisance North
  • South Dorchester Avenue
  • South Blackstone Avenue

Saturday, June 9

Operations at the medical center will remain as is, however, parking for medical center guests and patients will be provided exclusively at Parking Garage B, located at the corner of 57th and Cottage Grove. Convocation Weekend promises to be an exciting and memorable experience for the graduating students and their families. We thank you in advance for your patience and support as we recognize and celebrate their achievements.

Q: What is the schedule for Convocation Weekend?

A: On Friday, June 8, the main program will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Quadrangle and end at approximately 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, June 9, the events will run from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. throughout campus.

Q: Which streets will be closed and at what times?

A: Please refer to the maps identified above for all times and locations that will be affected.

Q: Will I still have access to the parking garages on and around campus?

A: On Friday, June 8, parking options at campus and medical center lots will remain the same.  On Saturday, June 9, a majority of University-operated parking lots and garages will be reserved for use by Convocation guests. One parking garage will be exclusively reserved for medical center guests, located at the corner of East 57th Street and Cottage Grove. Please refer to the maps above for details.

Q: Will my doctor appointment be affected?

A: On both Friday, June 8, and Saturday, June 9, hours and operations at the medical center will not be affected in any way.

Q: Will there be changes to the Metra schedule?

A: We do not anticipate changes to the Metra schedule. For more information, please visit Metra online at: https://metrarail.com/

Q: Will there be changes to CTA bus routes 171 and 172?

A: On Saturday, June 9, CTA bus routes 171 and 172 will be rerouted from 7:00 a.m. to noon, and suspended from noon to 5:00 p.m. For more information, please visit Chicago Transit Authority online at: www.transitchicago.com.
