Spring Convocation 2008

Graduates at ceremony

General Information

Convocation is a formal academic ceremony instituted in 1893 at the close of the University's first quarter. Unlike many other institutions, graduates of the University of Chicago are presented with their diplomas individually.

Convocation Information for Guests

Location

The Convocation ceremony takes place in Harper Quadrangle, rain or shine. Harper Quadrangle is located on the main campus of the University of Chicago, directly north of Harper Memorial Library (see campus map). Approximately 7,200 chairs are placed in this large grassy area.

As a courtesy to candidates, family members, and friends, please note the following requests:

  • Please do not smoke anywhere in Harper Quadrangle.
  • Please do not engage in loud conversation during the ceremony.
  • Please remain seated until Convocation has concluded.

Video screens will allow guests at a distance from the stage to get a closer view of individual candidates receiving their diplomas.

Water will be available at a number of stations located throughout Harper Quadrangle.

Indoor Seating

Guests who prefer an indoor location may view a live broadcast of the ceremony in Mandel Hall, located in the Reynolds Club. Limited seating will be available on a first-come/ first-served basis. Guests must have a ticket to be admitted to Mandel Hall.

Parking

As the University shares its neighborhood with the Hyde Park community, parking can often be a challenge. Please allow extra time to secure a parking spot. Street parking is available on the Midway Plaisance, as well as on nearby streets around campus. The University parking structure is located on 55th Street, with entrances on both Ellis and Greenwood. Limited visitor parking is available in this structure free of charge. In addition, the University of Chicago Hospitals operates a paid parking facility located at 59th Street and Maryland Avenue.

Handicapped or Disability Related Needs

Individuals with disabilities should contact the Office of Special Events at (773) 702-2513, before Monday, May 19, if they wish to request accommodations.

Please note: The University does not provide wheelchairs. Individuals are responsible for bringing their own.

Captioning for the Hearing Impaired will be available on the video screens in Harper Quadrangle and in Mandel Hall during the ceremony. Please call the Office of Special Events, (773) 702-2513, if you would like to use this service.

Photography and Videography

Chappell Graduation Images will record the ceremony and photograph candidates receiving their diplomas. Approximately two weeks after the ceremony, students will receive by mail, directly from Chappell, a passport-size, full-color proof of the photo of them receiving their diploma, as well as information about purchasing DVDs and photographs. Chappell will mail them to your current address listed with the University. If this is not correct, please update your file by June 2. There is no obligation to purchase. Chappell offers 100% guarantee with the purchase of a DVD or photograph package. Orders can be placed by calling (800) 424-3686, or through their website at www.gradimages.com.
