All degree candidates must wear the proper academic regalia that is appropriate for the degree they receive at Convocation, regardless of any previous degrees received. Convocation is a formal and traditional ceremony, and we ask that any attire or adornment worn by candidates be appropriate for the occasion.

Bachelor’s and Master's Regalia: Update

The deadline to purchase online has now passed. Bachelor’s and Master’s regalia is now available for In-person purchase at the University Bookstore.

Bachelor’s degree candidates are to purchase a cap, gown, and tassel, at the cost of $55.00.

Master’s degree candidates are to purchase a cap, gown, and tassel, at the cost of $82.00. Some divisions and schools require candidates to wear a hood, which can be purchased for an additional $48.00. It is encouraged that students contact their area dean of students office for regalia requirements and costs, as they differ by unit.

Sustainability:
Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are made of 100 percent postconsumer recycled plastic bottles, manufactured using GreenWeaver technology in the United States. If you would like to donate your gown after the ceremony, please coordinate directly with your dean of students office. Thank you for doing your part to help promote a sustainable campus.

• Attire may be ordered at Countdown to Convocation on April 2 and 3, 2025, at the University Bookstore, where professional portraits will be taken of candidates in their full academic regalia. For candidates who are unable to order at Countdown to Convocation, regalia will be available for purchase at the University Bookstore (2nd floor) beginning May 5, 2025.

Doctoral and Law Regalia: Update

The deadline to purchase or rent online has now passed. Please see details below regarding preorder rental pick up and remaining rental options. 

A limited number of Ph.D. and J.D. regalia will be available for In-person rental on a first-come, first-served basis beginning on June 2, 2025, at the University Bookstore. 

Doctoral and Law School degree candidates are to wear a tam, gown, and tassel, which will be available for rent at the cost of $75.00. Some candidates will be required to rent a hood for an additional $48.00. 

Preordered M.D. regalia rentals will be available for pick up starting on May 19, 2025, at the University Bookstore.

Preordered Ph.D. and J.D. regalia rentals will be available for pick up starting on June 2, 2025, at the University Bookstore.

All rented attire must be returned no later than June 9, 2025, to the University Bookstore.

Doctoral and Law Regalia:

• Doctoral and Law School degree candidates are to wear a tam, gown, and tassel, available for rent at the cost of $75.00. Some candidates will be required to rent a hood for an additional $48.00.

• Rented M.D. regalia orders must be placed by April 11, 2025, to ensure delivery before Convocation. Doctoral and Law School regalia must be ordered by April 21, 2025. You may also order your attire at Countdown to Convocation, on April 2 and 3, 2025. Preordered M.D. regalia rentals will be available for pick up starting on May 19, 2025, at the University Bookstore. Rented attire must be returned to the University Bookstore following the ceremony, no later than June 9, 2025.

• Doctoral and Law regalia may also be purchased online at oakhallcg.com/pages/uchicago. Purchased academic attire requires eight weeks lead time, therefore orders must be placed by March 28, 2025, for M.D. orders, and April 7, 2025, for Ph.D. and J.D. orders to guarantee delivery in time for the ceremony. Preordered rental Ph.D. and J.D. rentals regalia will be available for pick up starting on June 2, 2025, at the University Bookstore.

The University Bookstore is located at 970 East 58th Street. The Bookstore's standard hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
