Class Day is a College tradition, bringing together students, friends, and family on the day before Convocation. The program will feature a keynote speaker, student speakers and the presentation of College awards. Melina Hale, dean of The College, invites students and their family members to join this special occasion before attending the Dessert Reception at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Anna Chlumsky

AB'02, named UChicago's 2024 Class Day speaker

Anna Chlumsky is a six time Emmy nominated actress who has continued to make a name for herself in film, on television and on stage.

Most recently, Chlumsky wrapped production on "Bride Hard" where she starred alongside Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp. In 2022, Chlumsky joined Kevin Bacon, Carrie Preston and Theo Germain in John Logan’s Blumhouse horror, “They/Them”. The film was about a group of teenagers at an LGBTQ+ conversion camp that endure unsettling psychological techniques while being stalked by a mysterious masked killer. In February of the same year, she starred in the highly anticipated Shondaland/Netflix limited series “Inventing Anna.” The series is based on the New York Magazine article "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People" by Jessica Pressler. Chlumsky took on the role Vivian Kent, who was based on Pressler, and co-starred alongside Julia Garner.

In 2019, Chlumsky was nominated for her sixth consecutive Emmy in the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal as ‘Amy Brookheimer’ in the HBO series, “Veep,” which premiered for its seventh and final season in March 2019. She was also nominated for a Critics Choice Award and won a SAG Award with the cast in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Chlumsky has also won the Gracie Allen Award in 2015 for Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Comedy or Musical for her work in the series.

Chlumsky was last seen in “Hala,” which was acquired by Apple out of Sundance. The drama, directed by Minhal Baig, follows a high school senior, Hala, who struggles to balance being a suburban teenager in Chicago with her family’s strict upbringing. Chlumsky became a household name when she starred alongside Macaulay Culkin as ‘Vada Sultenfuss’ in the 1991 film, “My Girl.” Other notable film credits include: “The End of Tour,” “Bert and Arnie’s Guide to Friendship,” “In The Loop,” “The Good Guy,” “Blood Car,” “My Girl 2,” “Gold Diggers” “The Glamour Reel Short,” and “Wait.”

Chlumsky made her Broadway debut in 2015 in Scott Ellis’ revival of “You Can’t Take It With You.” She played ‘Alice Sycamore,’ the daughter of an eccentric family, opposite James Earl Jones and Annaleigh Ashford. She also reprised her role as ‘Iris Peabody’ in Joe DiPietro’s “Living on Love,” which made its Williamstown Theatre Festival debut in 2014 and transferred to Broadway. Based on the famed Peccadillo, Chlumsky starred opposite Renee Fleming, Douglas Sills and Jerry O’Connell. Additional TV credits include AMC’s “Halt and Catch Fire,” NBC’s “Hannibal,” “30 Rock” and “Law & Order SVU.”
